Programs and Services |
The Counseling Department at Rolling Hills Middle School offers a wide variety of services for your child. Below, please review the variety of programs and services that are currently available at Rolling Hills. Please contact your child's counselor for specific questions or concerns.
Individual Counseling: Counselors are available to meet with students on an individual basis for any social, emotional, or academic concern. Students may come to the main office to request to see their counselor individually. In other cases, referrals are made through teachers, administration, parents, and peers. Parent permission is required in order for students to participate in regular meetings with a counselor. Group Counseling: Throughout the school year, school success groups may be offered on a variety of subjects. Topics include academic/study skills, social skills, family changes, and fostering resilience. When offered, groups typically meet once a week, during elective periods. Students may be invited to participate in a school success group through a staff or parent referral, or they may refer themselves. Written parent permission is required in order for students participate in any of our groups. Classroom Presentations: Counselors visit 6th, 7th and 8th grade classrooms during the school year in order to present information on topics related to academic, social/emotional, and/or college/career development. Student Study Team (SST) Meetings: SST meetings are designed to assist struggling students with strategies that may help improve their academic performance. These meetings take place after teachers have already met with parents to address concerns (i.e., an S-1/S-2 meeting), have developed an action plan, but after 4-6 weeks of monitoring progress substantial improvement has not been observed, and more support is needed. SST meetings are held either before or after school, and include the child's school counselor, teachers, parents, and the student. During the meeting, teachers and counselors provide input on student progress and suggest ways for students to become more successful. An action plan is developed and provided to families after the meeting. We suggest placing this action plan in a place where it will be seen frequently by both the student and parents. This helps students remain focused on the strategies that were recommended. After having implemented all of the strategies on the action plan, if improvement is not noticed in 4-6 weeks, we recommend contacting the school counselor again to set up a follow-up SST meeting.
